Nov 22, 2018 - I was just wondering what radar detector/jammer you guys are using. I had the top of the line escort passport 8500 at the time and I feel. '14 S4 P+ DSG 034 Stage 2 ECU/TCU, AWE Touring, AWE S-Flo, Stoptech STR-60. And the 9500ix wasn't going to get any firmware upgrades to deal with IVT.

The Escort Passport S55 is a low-end version of the Escort Passport X80, stripped of features to reduce its price. It's mostly sold online by mass-marketers like Amazon. The X80 uses an older Escort platform, which results in some compromises.

Most notable is an unending string of false alarms. Blame this on the proliferation of (BSM) systems, which make low-priced detectors like this rather chatty companions.

BSM systems use radar to spot adjacent vehicles and warn when a lane-change maneuver is dangerous. They transmit continuously, setting off every detector in the vicinity.

Unfortunately, BSM radar shares the frequency with police radar and elderly models like the S55 can't tell them apart. The noise problem gets worse around town where radar-controlled automatic door openers also pollute K band. Drive within a quarter-mile of a Walmart and expect an alert. Commuters who pass the store twice daily can expect two alerts. The latest detectors use to eliminate false alarms from door-opener radar. The downside is that they're far pricier than the Escort S55. The S55 and X80 are similar under the skin—both use the same platform—and they have similar performance.

The X80 does have a few upscale features missing from the S55—, for example. This wireless technology isn't a big deal except for those planning to use the app. The $49 app—not compatible with the S55—links an Escort detector with a smartphone and uses the phone's GPS. Without this technology, like other non-GPS models the Escort S55 reliably goes off each time you drive by automatic door openers. So does the Escort X80.

Only when the latter is paired to a cellphone running the Escort Live app can it remember door-opener radar and ignore it. The S55's upper housing receives a swath of faux brushed-aluminum with a chromed capital S on the product name. The brightwork casts annoying mirror images into the windshield on sunny days.

The S55 lacks the X80's audio jack, making it a poor choice for a motorcyclist who wants to listen through a helmet headset or earbuds. Also on the missing list is a port. This absence may be a deal-breaker for because without USB, the firmware can't be upgraded to meet future threats.

Maybe, at least for those who buy radar detectors like disposable lighters. But older designs like the S55 and X80 lack the ability to control false alarms, reason enough for many to consider moving upmarket to a model with more advanced technology.

Or if false alerts drive you insane like they do 99.9% of us, then try a Passport 9500ix or Passport Max. Both will automatically learn and store false alerts then not alert to them again.

After these detectors learn the false alerts in your area then they are normally quiet and only alerting to threats. All of this is done automatically requiring no input from you. The Passport 9500ix performs better than your older X50 in most situations. Passport Max performs much better in all situations. You can use your X50 as a trade-in if you do not want to sell it yourself. Well here's my issue with my detector. It works fine most of the time.

But there are days when i'll get a string of random LASER detections. It'll usually burst in sets of 3 in a short period of a min or so.

This happens when I first start the vehicle or on the road. The unit will also fail to detect known targets too randomly.

Even though the device is on, it won't sound off. Sometimes, I won't know if the detector is actually working or not, until I drive past those speed signs on the side of the road. It will not correct itself on the drive. I will have to disconnect the plug and plug it back in.

This will usually correct the device, most of the time. I've had it where it still wouldn't detect that sign. But the next day, it will no problems. I've also have the 'Service Required' message on the screen. Most of the time, it happens soon after I start the vehicle. By pulling the plug and reconnecting power, it will usually clear up and work. A handful of times where the message wouldn't go away doing that.
